Rose Margaret Clark, 82, of Gleneden Beach, died of age-related causes on Monday, August 28, 2006 at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City.
Rose Dickson was born October 5, 1923, in New York City. She joined the U.S. Department of State in 1947, and served as a foreign service officer in U.S. embassies or consulates in Seoul, Tokyo, Vienna, Rio de Janeiro, Managua, and Tijuana until 1962. She was evacuated from Seoul when the Communists invaded at the start of the Korean war, worked under the Four Power Occupation in Austria, watched Brazilians carry their President Vargas through the streets after his suicide, and was in Managua when the elder Somoza was assassinated. She attained the rank of Vice-Consul, unusual for a woman in those days.
She married Clarence Sherman Clark, a Navy retiree she'd met in Nicaragua, and they settled on the Oregon coast. Their children are Michael Clark of Eugene, Oregon; Major Anne Schatz of Camp Zama, Japan; and Kevin Clark, Ph.D. of Arlington, Texas. Rose was a licensed tax consultant in Lincoln County from the 1980s until 2003. She enjoyed classical music, reading, artistic pursuits, and philanthropy.
Rose requested no funeral or memorial service. Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Lung Association. Her children are preparing a tribute to Rose on the Web at rose.c1ark.org (think "see one ark dot org"); if you have a picture of or a story about Rose please send it to rosesson@gmail.com or to Michael Clark, 1601 Olive St APT 802, Eugene OR 97401.
